Our Vicar (Pastor)

The Rev’d R Christopher Heying became vicar (pastor) in July 2017. Father Heying, a native of New Mexico, was reared in North Texas and graduated from the University of North Texas. He worked in education and social services before being formed as a parish priest at Nashotah House Seminary in Wisconsin, where he received his Masters of Divinity with honors. Since ordination he has served parishes in Texas, Tennessee, New York, Virginia, and Louisiana as curate, college chaplain, vicar, and rector.

Father Heying has been married to Cindy since 1990. They met while working together at All Saints’ Episcopal boarding school in Vicksburg. Cindy grew up in South Louisiana, received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and her master’s degree in special education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.  She has worked with students with multiple disabilities and led a community college program for transitional services and life skills  Together they have three children Mary Grace, who is a freshman majoring in engineering at LSU Baton Rouge; John Luke, a sophomore at Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts in Natchitoches; and Patrick, a fourth grader at Legacy in Bossier.

Bishop Jacob W. Owensby appointed Father Heying as vicar for Saint Matthias following an interview process where his vision and energy were noted by the Mission Council, staff, and Rhythms of Grace leaders.  He has indicated that he is particularly delighted to serve a parish that loves to worship and is at the forefront of ministry in the diocese to persons with special needs.  Father Heying is excited to serve together with Saint Matthias in all their current ministries and to work together with the church and the community to discern God’s direction for expanded opportunities for mission.
