The Rev’d R Christopher Heying became vicar (pastor) in July 2017. Father Heying, a native of New Mexico and reared in North Texas, graduated from the University of North Texas. He worked in education and social services before being formed as a parish priest at Nashotah House Seminary in Wisconsin, where he received his Masters of Divinity with honors. Since ordination he has served parishes in Texas, Tennessee, New York, Virginia, and Louisiana as curate, college chaplain, vicar, and rector.
Father Heying and Cindy married at Camp Hardtner in 1990. They had met while working together at All Saints’ Episcopal boarding school in Vicksburg. Cindy grew up in South Louisiana, has her master’s degree in special education and is the director for the Program for Successful Employment at Bossier Parish Community College. They have three children: Mary Grace, in college at LSU Baton Rouge; John Luke, at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts in Natchitoches; and Patrick, in elementary school in Bossier.
Bishop Jacob W. Owensby appointed Father Heying as vicar for Saint Matthias following an interview process where his vision and energy were noted by the Mission Council, staff, and Rhythms of Grace leaders. He has indicated that he is particularly delighted to serve a parish that loves to worship and is at the forefront of ministry in the diocese to persons with special needs. Father Heying is excited to serve together with Saint Matthias in all their current ministries and to work together with the church and the community to discern God’s direction for expanded opportunities for mission.
